Putting Safety First at Adult Healthcare Facilities
Family-run company Jackloc, based in Claybrooke Parva, is delighted to announce that its award-winning Jackloc window restrictor is helping keep vulnerable residents safe across a network of leading care homes in Leicestershire, which won the Pinders award for best renovation 2015.
The Jackloc has been specified by Freedom Care, a provider of bespoke health care services for adults diagnosed with complex health needs, and is helping to protect residents who have been deemed at risk of absconding.
Freedom Care founder, Joseph Kinch explains, it was the Jackloc’s product specification and testing to BS EN standards which led them to specify the Jackloc brand across their homes: “We provide bespoke and quality care for adults suffering from communication difficulties, Asperger’s Syndrome, Autism, ADHD and personality disorders as well as other complex needs.
“Keeping our residents safe is a key priority but this has to be addressed in a way which does not inappropriately restrict their freedom.”
Indeed to lock a window or door, any care home must obtain permission from the local authority Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) department. The Jackloc was proposed and approved as it restricts the window opening to a safe distance but still allows sufficient ventilation of a room.
Joe continues: “The Jackloc provides a practical solution which doesn’t affect the window’s functionality: Residents who have tried to escape in the past feel calmer and safer just knowing that climbing out of the window is no longer an option.”
But despite being based in the same county it was actually whilst on holiday that Joe first discovered the benefits of the Jackloc restrictor: “I saw the Jackloc installed at a hotel in which I was staying. When we came to specify the brand of restrictor for use across our homes we looked at a number of options but felt that the Jackloc offered the most comprehensive solution.
“The product was very easy to fit from the inside, can be easily disengaged in the case of an emergency and the team at Jackloc couldn’t have been more helpful, I really would recommend them to other care facilities across the UK.”
The precision engineered Jackloc window restrictors were the winners of the Thomas Telford award for innovation in 2007. The Jackloc Mk2 cable window restrictor is a simple, robust restraint that connects the opening window and its frame with a cable, restricting the amount it can be opened; a key-operated lock releases the restraint if required. Unlike other window restrictors, Jackloc has universal appeal as it is easy to fit to any type of window material and frame, whether new or old.
Director Emma Wells concludes: “It is fantastic to hear such positive feedback from a quality care provider – at Jackloc we firmly believe that the price of safety cannot be measured and it is very rewarding to know that Jackloc is making such a positive difference to the lives of some of the county’s vulnerable adults.”
